4 Tips For Buying Fire Extinguishers For Your Factory

by Ethan Mccoy

Buying fire extinguishers for your factory is not a step that you should forget. In fact, it is something that you should do before any workers start doing anything within your factory. These tips will help if you're inexperienced with buying fire extinguishers for industrial purposes or you just want to make sure that you get it right.

1. Buy Brand New, Unexpired Fire Extinguishers

One thing that you should not try to cut costs on is the fire extinguishers that you purchase to place throughout your factory. Make sure that you buy them brand new and check them to make sure that they are not expired. Additionally, take note of the expiration dates on your fire extinguishers so that you do not forget to replace them when it's time.

2. Think About the Types of Fires That Might Be Most Likely in Your Factory

Some fire extinguishers are designed for use for chemical fires, and others are designed for electrical fires. Some are made for grease fires. The risks in your factory are different from in other buildings, so you'll need to think about the types of fires that might be most likely in your factory and purchase the right fire extinguishers for these types of jobs.

3. Install Fire Extinguishers in Easy-to-Reach Locations Throughout Your Factory

In addition to making sure that you follow the rules and regulations about the number of fire extinguishers that you're supposed to have in your factory and their placement, think a little more about how you can make sure that they are accessible for your employees. For example, you don't want your employees to have to walk around equipment or walk outside of their work stations to grab a fire extinguisher if they need one. Instead, you want to make sure that they can easily grab one within a short distance from where they're working if needed. Thinking about where your employees are positioned while working in your factory and buying and installing more fire extinguishers than what is required are two important steps to take.

4. Take Time to Train Employees About Fire Extinguisher Use

Your factory employees should know where the fire extinguishers are located, how they are supposed to use them, how they can alert others about the fire — such as by pulling a fire alarm — and how they can evacuate the building. Having a meeting and going over all of these things with your employees, as well as posting helpful signage and instructions near your fire extinguishers, can help you make sure that your factory employees know how to react in an emergency situation.
