Three Reasons To Keep A Heating Oil Tank Full Through Every Season

by Ethan Mccoy

Naturally, late fall and winter are the times of the year when access to heat seems to matter most. Consequently, for homes that use heating oil to fuel their heating systems, there is a belief that these times of the year are also the only times when it is important to keep the oil tank full. This idea, however, is inaccurate. Keeping the heating oil tank full all year long is important for a variety of reasons.

Access to Heat

It does not matter where you live, there is no set date by which the temperature seems to drop or rise. Although there is a time of year, the exact moment when you need to turn your heat on is not easy to predict. When the tank remains full all year long, you are ready no matter when this date is.

Not only are you able to turn the heat on at will, but you also do not have to experience some of the early cold season waiting. Often, around this time of the year, heating oil companies have a high demand for fuel refills, so it is not unheard of to not be able to get fuel delivery immediately.

Condensation

The more heating oil you have in the tank, the less room there is for other things to settle inside the tank, including condensation. During the spring and summer, the temperature changes outside can cause condensation to form inside the tank. Condensation accumulation, or water accumulation, can increase the risk of rust forming inside the tank

Rust can cause sediment to form at the base of the tank, which can create a clog and damage the tank. The excess moisture also creates an inviting environment for bacteria to form inside, which can lower the efficiency and integrity of the oil.

Price Fluctuations

The price of heating oil is not consistent. Sometimes, within a single week, the price of the oil can change. To offer the fairest pricing, oil companies sometimes charge the market rate for oil. This means when the price goes down, the customer saves, but when the price increases, the customer pays more.

During the cooler months, it is not unheard of the fuel price to increase. However, if you already have fuel in your tank, you will be able to largely bypass this additional cost, since you filled your tank when fuel was cheaper.

If you have previously overlooked the benefits of keeping your tank full, there's no need to worry. Contact a heating oil company in your area to have your tank filled so that you can take advantage of these benefits.
