Tips for Setting Up Stone Gravel as a Landscaping Material

by Ethan Mccoy

Stone gravel works pretty well as a landscaping material. Homeowners can choose from a bunch of colors and these tiny stones have a lot of practical purposes too, such as controlling where water runs off. If you're setting up stone gravel yourself for landscaping purposes, implement these tips into this process.

Assess Optimal Locations

In order for stone gravel to look great around your property's landscaping, put some thought into ideal locations. Then stone gravel will not only become a beautiful element on the exterior of your property, but it will complement other things as well.

If you look at examples of stone gravel placement for different homes online, you'll get a general idea of design schemes and layouts. You just want the locations to make sense, whether it's around all of the trees in the front yard or around the perimeter of your home.

Pack in Soil Tightly

Before you begin placing your selected stone gravel around your landscaping, try to pack in the soil around the setup locations. This is a required step because it will keep the ground conditions stable where the gravel is going.

Then you won't have to keep adding stone gravel because of shifting soil conditions. The placement you select is where your stone gravel will remain over the years. There are special hand tools you can buy that have large flat surfaces, making this packing step a lot easier for you to complete.

Use a Rake for Proper Distribution

It can be hard to get the perfect placement with stone gravel just by administering it around your landscaping using the bags the gravel came in. Instead, you'll probably have to manipulate the gravel around until you get the right evenness and location.

One tool that can make moving stone gravel a pretty easy task to complete is a standard rake. You can use it to manipulate various sections of the stone gravel that need a minor or major adjustment. Keep manipulating stone gravel with a rake until you're happy with what you see. Keep this rake around too just in case you need to make adjustments later on at some point.

Homeowners have access to some pretty great landscaping materials, with stone gravel being one of the most dynamic and affordable. After you've made a selection, getting it in place won't be a tiresome endeavor if you use the right tools and have a reason for each step.
